Here at Poi Yeah! we help people build their cultural competency in a informative & explorative way, making Maori culture, Taonga and Matauranga Maori more accessible.
Each participant will:
– Be provided with a DIY Poi pack containing all the materials required to assemble a pair of poi.
– By the end of the workshop each participant would have learnt to 3 or 4 plait and assemble a pair of poi.
– Learnt the history, past present and future of Poi.
– Be able to share this skill and pass on this knowledge to their whanau.
– Learn Poi terminology in Te Reo
– Keep the mauri of the poi alive.
– Connect to Te Ao Maori.
– Actively engage in a wananga to build connections and strengthen relationships.
– Gain knowledge and understand the health benefits of participating in a wananga and of having a strong cultural identity.
– How to link Poi making to the holistic Maori health model Te Whare Tapawha (mentally, spiritually, socially and physically). i.e Whakapapa research, spiritual journeys, hand and eye coordination.
– How to link Wananga involvement to the holistic Maori health model Te Whare Tapawha (mentally, spiritually, socially and physically). i.e Positive health outcomes of empowerment, learning, connectedness, renewal, strength.
