The Charlotte Museum will ‘POP-UP’ at Pride to exhibit items and objects from its unique collections about the historical queer lesbian communities of Aotearoa and their shared lesbian cultural experience.

As the Charlotte Museum is the only museum in Australasia preserving the artefacts and histories of queer lesbians and their communities, it has a widely diverse collection in many genres, including books, postcards, publications, t-shirts, photos, films, badges, posters, ceramics, textiles and artwork. This exhibit creates an opportunity for all our rainbow families to enjoy the complex and intriguing, somethings humorous, and passionate stories of queer lesbians who are often unseen, or intentionally ignored in mainstream history.

Through their stories you will meet an unapologetic radical community of beautiful, handsome, diverse, political, loud and proud queer lesbian womxn, women, womyn who came before and exist alongside us in queer lesbian communities. You will be able to find connections and ask questions about your rich vibrant heritage, and know you are not alone and never have been.

The ‘POP-UP’ will also host two other events. The first is a live performance night on Friday 26 February, including readings, artistic performances and music from 7pm. Then on Saturday 27 February from 10am you are invited to bring donations for the museum’s collections and research archive. We would love the opportunity to preserve your treasures and their stories as part of the museum on behalf of our queer lesbian communities and the generations to come.

This event was made possible through the Pride & Spark Empowerment Initiative.
