Queer Herstory History OURstories Walking Tour of K’Rd

Queer Herstory History OURstories Walking Tour of K’Rd

Presented by The Charlotte Museum

Saturday 13 Feb, 3pm - 4:30pm
Tuesday 16 March, 6pm - 7:30pm

Studio One, Toi Tū  1 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby
Free Event

This walking tour celebrates the queer lesbian and LGBTQ+ spaces and community places on and around K’Road. Queer spaces were at the forefront of what has been described as ‘the golden era’ of Auckland’s nightlife and club scene centred on K’Rd amongst a vibrant and dynamic subculture. Queer organisations important to our communities based themselves on K’Rd to be close to who they were advocating and working for. This was the era before gentrification of nearby gaybourhoods Grey Lynn and Ponsonby and before K’Rd’s seedy, wild reputation got cleaned up.

Meet outside of Studio One Toi Tū.

These queer spaces were safe spaces, sometimes the only safe space where past generations of our communities could be their authentic selves. In these spaces was where queer people were able to survive and thrive.

We know that if we do not actively document the heritage of the spaces and places frequented by lesbian bi trans queer and sapphic women they will disappear without a trace, the memory of them gone and forgotten.

This is true for all queer heritage – the stories need to be unearthed, then constantly told, and retold, acknowledged and enjoyed.
By remembering and sharing the Herstory History OUR-stories of K’Rd – who we were, where we played and what we did – we celebrate our personal and collective spirit and honour those who came before.
